Hi there, craft buddy! Are you getting into the holiday spirit yet? I know it’s not *technically* Thanksgiving, but I’m knee-deep in cute Christmas decor DIYs so they are here for you when you want them.
Today’s video is full of Christmas DIYs and even includes some cute Christmas DIYs to make and sell to make some extra money for the holidays! And who doesn’t love that?! The theme for this one is Christmas baking DIY decor, including gingerbread decor DIYs. Many people use gingerbread for their kitchen decor, others for their whole house decor. I’m using this theme in our dining room through a gingerbread Christmas tree, and other gingerbread and marshmallow-themed DIY decor.
Stay until the end to see my best gingerbread decorating ideas for Christmas, including my gingerbread and hot cocoa-themed tiered tray. Happy Crafting!
PROJECTS IN THIS VIDEO + SUPPLIES USED
DIY Salt Dough Gingerbread Cookies – that look so real!
I mixed 2 cups of flour, 1 cup iodized salt, and 1/4 cup ground cinnamon in a bowl. Then gradually added 1 cup of water and then stirred to get my desired consistency. I then added a little vanilla extract I got at Dollar Tree to enhance the scent. Once your dough is ready, I rolled mine out with a silicone rolling pin and then cut them out with some Target $1 cookie cutters and a butter knife (houses).
Once done, add holes for any you want to make into ornaments. You can use a toothpick or straw for this step. Then pop them onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and bake low and slow at 250 degrees for a minimum of 45 minutes. Do that first, and then adjust the remaining time depending on how quickly they hardened. I like to let mine dry about 75% of the way in the oven so I can ice them, and then let the rest of the drying happen as days go by to keep the deep brown pigment. That will keep them looking like real gingerbread cookies!
After they cooled, I pulled up some Google images of beautiful cookies, and use them as a guide to ice the cookies with puffy paint. I’d suggest letting them dry overnight so you don’t mess up the paint. Once that’s done, you can hang your ornaments and display your cookies. So easy, but so cute! A cute way to hang them would be with this red and white festive baker’s twine from Amazon.
Easy & High-End DIY Salt Dough Gingerbread Cookie Wreath
Taking those easy cookies one step further, I decided to use them on a gorgeous hoop wreath. I took one piece of a 3D wreath form from Dollar Tree (similar), added two greenery picks I got for a couple of dollars at Hobby Lobby and hooked them on with jute twine. I then used Gorilla Glue hot glue sticks to adhere my cookies to the greenery and hung the wreath with some fun candy cane ribbon from Hobby Lobby.
