Hey craft buddy! Today we are jumping head-first into 2×4 crafts including DIY 2×4 outdoor patio furniture! When I’ve done these wood build videos in the past, the craft buddies loved them. If you’ve missed them check them out here:

Now that the weather has gotten SO MUCH nicer in Illinois, I’m ready to build. This all started when I wanted to find an affordable outdoor patio furniture set and I got the worst STICKER SHOCK. Deck furniture isn’t cheap. I wasn’t looking for low-quality furniture, but I didn’t want to break the bank either.

And, as I do, that led me to want to build my own! Then I had additional 2x4s so I decided to make other decor options as well as some new DIY Floating shelves for our house. So let’s jump right in!

Today we’re making some excellent 2×4 DIYs! I’ll be using 2x4x8 construction lumber I got from Menards for $3.18 each. You can get these at any hardware store (same price at Home Depot and Lowes) and you can also use pressure-treated or cedar 2x4s for the outdoor furniture portion of these DIY projects, too! I love wood-building projects to help me save while bringing in wood decor to my home!

These wood DIYs also double as 2×4 DIYs to sell for beginners! I’m showing you these wood-building projects to inspire you to bring your own wood-build ideas to life! And my scrap wood projects plus the shelves and bench would be awesome to make and sell at a vendor booth!

How to Build DIY Floating Shelves

Up first we’re making DIY floating shelves! I wanted to make this floating shelves DIY because I needed some additional space for my seasonal decor. I originally learned this technique from Shanty2Chic – be sure to check out their tutorial if you’d like to make smaller shelves. Watch the video below to see it come together.

SHOPPING LIST:
1 – 2x4x8 Pine
1 – 1x6x8 Pine
2 – 1x8x8 Pine
3″ Wood Screws
1 1/2″ Brad Nails
Wood Glue
Stain – I used Minwax Early American
Sealer – I used Verathan Triple Thick

CUT LIST:
1 – 2×4 cut to 54″ – Width of the shelf, minus 6″ to give a 3″ gap on each side
4 – 2×4 cut to 5.25″ – Depth of shelf (side 1×8 piece) minus 2″ to a lot for the backboard, A 1×68 is usually 7.75″
1 – 1×6 – 60″ – This is the width of your shelf
2 – 1×6 – 7.25″ Measure and cut to the width of your top and bottom board
2 -1×8 – 58.5″ Approx. 1.5″ less than the width of your shelf

How to Build a Modern Organic 2×4 Bench

With some of my scrap 2x4s, I decided to make this modern organic bench for under $10 in lumber!

SHOPPING LIST:
1 – 2x4x8 Pine
1 – 2x6x4
3″ Wood Screws
2.5″ Pocket Hole Screws
Stain – I used a mix of stains
Sealer – I used Verathan Triple Thick

CUT LIST:
4 – 2×4 cut to 24″ long with parallel ends cut to a 10-degree miter
2 – 2×4 cut to 6″ with 10-degree miters on each end perpendicular
1 – 2×8 cut to 36″ for the seat

And now for the grand finale! I’m so proud of this build because I did it all by myself and I love how it all came out! Because these needed to be well-engineered, I turned to my favorite, Ana White, for plans to make sure they wouldn’t break when people sat in them! Here are the plans for your reference:
