Hey craft buddy! 💚
If you’re planning a first birthday party and want it to feel magical without blowing your budget, you are in the right place.
My youngest son just turned one, and after a very wild first year, we celebrated with a Wild One / Party Animals themed birthday party — complete with colorful animals, playful details, and lots of DIY decor. The best part? I DIYed almost everything to keep costs down while still creating a party that felt fun, thoughtful, and special.
In this post, I’m sharing all the DIY party ideas, decor tips, and budget-friendly hacks I used — plus free printables and SVGs so you can recreate this party for your own little party animal.
Why a Wild One / Party Animals Theme Is Perfect for a First Birthday
A Wild One first birthday party is such a sweet way to celebrate that big milestone. It works especially well for one-year-olds because:
- Bright colors + animals are visually exciting for little ones
- The theme is flexible (jungle, safari, zoo, party animals — all fair game!)
- It’s easy to DIY without needing licensed characters
- You can make it playful without it feeling overdone
For us, this theme felt extra meaningful after a challenging first year — and it gave us a chance to celebrate just how far our little guy has come.

Easy DIY First Birthday Decorations (That Look High-End)
DIY Party Animal Decor (My Favorite Detail)
These little party animals were the stars of the party.
I dressed up both small figurines and larger plush animals with:
- Mini party hats
- Bow ties, tutus, and capes made from tulle
- Faux cotton candy (DIYed for a fraction of the cost)
Store-bought versions of this kind of decor can get pricey fast, but DIYing them kept everything affordable — and honestly, way cuter.
💡 Pro tip: Use lightweight stuffed animals so you can hang or style them without damaging walls or furniture.

Faux Floating Balloons (No Helium Needed!)
If you want balloons that look like they’re floating — without paying for helium — this DIY is for you.
I created faux balloons using:
- Foam balls or felt balls
- Regular balloons
- Floral wire
- Hair elastics or glue dots
They hold their shape, stay upright, and can be reused for future parties. I used them on cake table animals and throughout the decor.

Budget Balloon Garland (Skip the Expensive Setup!)
Balloon arches can cost hundreds — but you can absolutely DIY one yourself.
Here’s the simple method:
- Inflate balloons in pairs and tie them together
- Twist pairs into groups of four
- String them together using fishing line or twine
- Hang with Command hooks for no wall damage
I used leftover balloons from past parties mixed with inexpensive ones from Dollar Tree and Walmart. The result? Big party impact on a tiny budget.

DIY Party Signs & Canva Design Tips
Custom Party Signage Made Easy
I design all of my party signage in Canva, and it’s one of my favorite ways to make a party feel custom without spending much.
You can:
- Create welcome signs
- Label food and drink stations
- Add themed quotes or phrases
If you’re not into designing, don’t worry — there are also great printable templates on Etsy. And if you do love DIYing, I’ve added several of my designs to my free file library.

DIY Monthly Photo Banner for a First Birthday
One of my favorite first birthday traditions is a monthly photo banner showing the baby’s growth from newborn to one year old. This project is included in my free file library, and it’s such a meaningful piece of decor I’ll be using well past the party.
