I have a confession. I walked into Menards for wood filler and left with a cart full of shims, paint stir sticks, and a $10.99 handy panel I had zero plan for. That’s basically how this whole video happened.
If you’ve been here a while, you know I love building out of off-the-shelf pine. But this time I went digging a little further into the hardware store aisles, past the lumber and into the stuff most people walk right by. Wood shims. Paint stir sticks. Those cheap handy panels. Things that don’t look like much sitting on the shelf, but turn into something completely different once you start cutting into them.
This video has five projects in it, and they range from “under two dollars in materials” all the way up to “I bought myself a new saw for this.” There’s a wheelbarrow planter built from a wood crate that actually rolls. A tiny candy bowl I made because I couldn’t afford the needlepoint version I really wanted. A pair of whimsy pumpkins with angled cuts that give them a shape I haven’t seen anywhere else. A scarecrow and a witch built out of a single pack of shims, plus a matching set of candy corn. And a big wood cutout silhouette that started as a last-minute impulse buy and ended up being one of my favorite pieces I’ve made all year.
